Herbal Clay Facemask For Glowing Skin

Herbal Clay Facemask For Glowing Skin

Ditch the disposable facemasks with mystery ingredients for homemade clay masks catered to you and your skin type! They’re better for you, your wallet, the environment, and are easy to make. Whether you want something for oily skin, sun spots, or acne, herbal clay masks have you covered!

Types of Clays for Skincare

Clays are mined from all over the earth and the concentration of minerals in each type will determine their color and effect.

Kaolin Clay- Also called white clay, kaolin clay is the most popular clay used. It is mined in France, Germany, the Czech Republic, and the United States. Kaolin clay is one of the gentlest clay making it great for sensitive skin and suitable for most skin types. Though less drying than others and if you have super oily skin another might be a better option.

French Green Clay- Mined in France, french green clay gets its color from decomposed plant matter and iron oxide. It's a powerful exfoliant and absorbent making it ideal for oily skin.

Bentonite Clay- Bentonite clay comes from volcanic ash and can be found all over the world, a lot of which comes from the United States. It is a drying clay great for drawing out impurities and is often used for acne. It reduces inflammation and balances the texture of the skin. Best for normal-oily skin types.

Rhassoul Clay- Sometimes called Morocco clay, Rhassoul clay comes from the Mountains in Morocco. It's best for normal-oily skin types and contains higher amounts of silica than any other clay soothing and brightening the skin.

Fuller Earth Clay- The most absorbent clay of them all, fuller earth clay got its name when wool textile workers would use it to pull out oils from their sheep's wool. It can be mixed with other clays to pull out impurities or used alone for oily skin. If you use it alone I recommend only using it occasionally due to its very drying nature.

Herbs For Face Masks

Comfrey- Comfrey is soothing and moistening with excellent skin-repairing actions making it great for damaged skin.

Calendula- Calendula brightens, hydrates, and soothes the skin. I especially love it for any sun damage or rashes.

Plantain- Plantain's moistening nature is great to soothe skin irritation especially when it's red, hot, and inflamed. It also acts as a drawing agent pulling out impurities from the skin.

Rosehips- Rosehips are high in vitamin C which is great for sun damage, brightening the skin, aging skin, and scarring. Use the petals and leaves of the rose plant for a skin-tightening astringent.

Hibiscus- Hibiscus is a cooling anti-inflammatory for the skin with mild astringent actions making it great for oily skin.

Chamomile- Chamomile is not only calming as a tea it is also calming to the skin. Chamomile calms inflammation, irritation, and redness. Great for all skin types!

Face Mask Directions

  1. Decided on your clay and herb, you can also experiment with combining multiple.
  2. If your herbs aren't already powdered, grind them into a fine powder. A coffee bean grinder or mortar and pestle work here.
  3. Combine 1 tsp of your clay with 1 tsp of your herbs.
  4. Next, add 2 tsp of water, we are doing equal parts clay/ herbs: water.
  5. Mix to make a paste. Add more clay and herb mixture or water if needed.
  6. Using clean hands or a face mask brush cover your face with the paste avoiding your eyes.
  7. As soon as it dries gently pat the paste off with a warm towel.
