Family:
Gentianaceae
Part Used:
Root.
Energetics & Taste:
Bitter, Cooling, and drying.
Habitat:
Native to the Alps and mountainous regions of central and southern Europe. Gentian is threatened due to overharvesting and should only be purchased from cultivated sources.
Key Benefits:
Gentian is one of the strongest bitters available and is highly effective for stimulating sluggish digestion, especially when accompanied by depression. The gut and neurotransmitters are closely linked, with most serotonin being produced in the gut, so digestive issues and depression often occur together. Gentian is excellent for all atonic conditions but lacks tone, such as diarrhea. It can be used to address a lack of appetite, poor nutrient absorption, slow digestion, and as a general digestive aid. Additionally, gentian can help lower cholesterol levels.
Contraindications:
Don’t use in gastric ulcers, gastritis, and pregnancy.
